The HSE has announced that a review into baby and maternal deaths covering the years 2021 – 2023 is scheduled to commence later this year. It is anticipated that the time period for the review will be extended. The terms of reference are awaited.

This is a welcome opportunity to review maternal patient care which has oft been neglected. However open disclosure and transparency is essential for those patients and families involved in this review.

Campaign group Safer Births Ireland, (who represent women and families affected by infant deaths), has urged the Government to go further by setting up an independent review into perinatal deaths spanning ten years. Safer births Ireland is concerned that there have been a substantial number of neonatal deaths in the last decade as reflected in the number of inquests, clinical reviews, court cases and media reporting in the area. Concerns have also been raised in a number of cases around the standard of maternal and antenatal care to include fetal heartbeat monitoring and delayed deliveries.
