FIRST PANEL

Healthcare Litigation

Oonah McCrann

Ms Oonah McCrann SC

Ms Oonah McCrann SC was educated in UCD and The Honourable Society of The Kings Inns where she was the recipient of The James Murnaghan Award.

She was called to the Bar in 1983 and to the Inner Bar in 2003. She was elected a Bencher of The Kings Inns in 2008. She has served on the Bar Council and the Barristers Professional Conduct Tribunal and is a former Chairperson of the Broadcasting Complaints Tribunal. She is Judge Advocate General to the Defence Forces.

She has a keen interest in the Arts and is on the Board of the Irish Baroque Orchestra. She is  also a board member  of The Children’s Health Foundation. She specialises in Professional and Clinical negligence and is a CEDER accredited mediator.

Judge Emily Egan

The Hon. Ms Justice Emily Egan

The Hon. Ms Justice Emily Egan has served as a Judge of the High Court since October 2021.  Prior to her call to the bench she practiced as a Senior Counsel specialising in medical law, public law, and regulatory law.

Ms. Justice Egan studied law at Trinity College Dublin from where she graduated with an LLB degree in 1991 and later obtained a BCL degree from the University of Oxford. She studied at Kings Inn and was called to the Irish bar in 1994 before being called to the Inner bar in 2010.

Alison Kelleher

Ms Alison Kelleher

Alison is a Partner in Comyn Kelleher Tobin LLP’s Healthcare & Litigation Department, with expertise in clinical negligence and complex High Court cases.

She’s a CEDR-accredited mediator, former ADR Committee Chair, and a go-to advisor in major healthcare disputes.  

Sara Gruer

Ms Sara Grewar

Ireland Claims Team Lead, Medical Protection

Sara is a qualified solicitor and worked in private practice for 13 years before joining Medical Protection in 2016.

As well as managing the handling of claims by our solicitors, Sara’s role includes reporting on medicolegal trends, giving insight into the claim’s environment, and liaising with key stakeholders in Ireland.

Sara has been involved in Medical Protection’s tort reform work for many years which has included contributing to submissions to recent Government reviews and attending a consultation with the Government’s Interdepartmental Working Group on the rising cost of health-related claims.

Artificial Intelligence and Assistive Technology

Dr Rónán Kennedy

Dr Rónán Kennedy

Dr Rónán Kennedy is an Associate Professor in the School of Law, University of Galway.

Amongst his publications are ‘Information and Communications Technology Law in Ireland’ (Clarus Press, Press,) and a Spotlight report for the Oireachtas Library and Research Service on ‘Algorithms, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence in the Irish Legal Services Market’ (2021).

Prof Brian MacNamee

Prof. Brian McNamee

Dr. Brian Mac Namee joined the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin where he is an associate professor in 2015, and in 2024 became UCD Site Director at the Insight Research Ireland Centre for Data Analytics.

Brian’s research focuses on interactive machine learning methods that place people, and their expertise, at the centre of the model training process as well as applications of machine learning in diverse fields including agriculture, space, medicine, and virtual reality. Brian is also committed to education and the second edition of the successful textbook he co-authored, “Fundamentals of Machine Learning for Predictive Data Analytics: Algorithms, Worked Examples and Case Studies”, published with MIT Press and available in 5 languages, was released in July 2020.

Before joining UCD Brian received a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from Trinity College Dublin in 2004, and after a period working in industry joined the Dublin Institute of Technology (now Technological University Dublin) School of Computing where he co-founded the Applied Intelligence Research Centre and was a founding co-principal investigator at the Enterprise Ireland CeADAR Technology Centre for applied data analytics research. Brian is also Co-Director of the SFI Centre for Research Training in Machine Learning and director of training at Krisolis Ltd, an Irish data analytics training and consultancy company.

James Northridge

Mr James Northridge

James Northridge is a recognised expert and researcher in assistive technology, and an experienced expert witness in personal injury and medical negligence cases.

Based in Ireland, he has delivered hundreds of court-compliant reports across Ireland and the UK. He is the founder of UrAbility, an assistive technology consultancy and training platform, and a former Marie Curie Research Fellow at UMass Medical School in Boston.

Women’s Health

Scarlett O Sullivan - Callan Tansey Solicitors

Scarlett O’Sullivan

Partner at Callan Tansey Solicitors LLP

Scarlett, O’Sullivan is a Partner in the Callan Tansey Solicitors medical negligence department.

Scarlett completed her undergraduate degree in UCC and graduated with an LLB from UL in 2004, receiving the Presidential Medal. After qualifying as a solicitor in 2008 and working for many years in the field of law, she completed her LLM at UCC in 2016.

Scarlett has a wealth of experience in Personal Injuries Litigation and has a particular interest in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Medical Negligence Claims. She represents families at inquests and in wrongful death actions. Scarlett also represents clients who formed part of the South Kerry CAMHS review.

She also advises clients in civil actions in relation to historic child abuse and sexual assault claims. Scarlett is an excellent advocate and is passionate about women’s health.

Ms Ogechi Nsoedo

Women’s Health Author, Physio and Advocate

Ogechi Nsoedo is an expert in Women’s Health and a Chartered Physiotherapist with over 21 years of clinical experience. She specialises in complex pelvic, obstetric, and gynaecological conditions.

A passionate advocate for women’s health, Ogechi is dedicated to de-stigmatising and normalising conversations around these often-overlooked issues.

Outside of her professional work, she is a proud mum of three, a gospel choir singer, and a committed youth coach and mentor

Kathleen King

Ms. Kathleen King

Kathleen King is an internationally recognised advocate for people with endometriosis and adenomyosis. She combines personal experience with a medical science background to amplify voices through advocacy, education, and support.

Dr Mary McCafferty

Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist

Dr Mary McCaffrey is a Senior Medical Advisor with MPS, and is Deputy Coroner for Cork City. Dr. McCaffrey previously worked as a Gynaecologist at Limerick Women’s Prison.

 

Dr Catherine Yoong

Dr Catherine Johnson

Dr Catherine Johnson qualified from Imperial College in 2002 and became a Consultant Radiologist in 2013 in Oxford. Her specialist interests are Oncology and Gynaecology. She began her medicolegal practice 10 years ago.

FOURTH PANEL

Assisted Decision Making

Emma Slattery BL

Ms. Emma Slattery BL

Emma Slattery BL is a practising barrister specialising in capacity law and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act. She is the author of The Assisted Decision-Making Handbook (Bloomsbury, 2024).

Called to the Bar of Ireland in 2013 and the Bar of England and Wales in 2018, she regularly lectures and writes on capacity law and medico-legal issues. Emma is a CEDR qualified mediator; she acts as a mediator and quasi-judicial decision-maker for a number of state bodies.

Emma is also member of Bar Council’s Human Rights Committee

Geoffrey Shannon

His Honour Judge Dr Geoffrey Shannon SC

His Honour Judge Dr Geoffrey Shannon SC is a leading authority in Child Law and Family Law in Ireland and was appointed to the Circuit Court in March 2023.

Judge Shannon was the first person appointed to the role of Special Rapporteur on Child Protection for the Irish government and was reappointed by successive governments to that role from 2006 to July 2019.  He was also chairman of the Adoption Authority of Ireland (and its predecessor the Adoption Board) from 2007 to 2020. 

Judge Shannon has made very significant contributions to child protection in Ireland and throughout the European Union. He has carried out several major inquiries and reviews in the family and child law area on behalf of government and international bodies, most notably the Independent Child Deaths Review which examined the deaths of 196 children who died in state care or known to child protection services between 2000 and 2010.

In May 2017, an audit authored by Dr Shannon on the exercise by An Garda Síochána (the Irish police force) of its emergency child protection powers was published.  It is the largest worldwide audit of the exercise by a police force of its emergency child protection powers.

His Honour Judge Shannon was the Irish Expert Member on the Commission on European Family Law. He has also played a key role in judicial training on international family and child law. A prolific legal scholar, he has written or co-authored 30 books, 36 articles in refereed journals, and 42 articles in professional magazines on child and family law. His Honour Judge Shannon is the recipient of several awards for his work. These include the 2005 JCI Outstanding Person of the Year Award, the 2006 Canon Maurice Handy Award and the 2013 and 2023 Irish Law Award.  On 23 June 2017, Mr Justice Peter Kelly, then President of the Irish High Court, presented His Honour Judge Shannon with the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association Award for outstanding contribution to legal scholarship for his entire work to date.

Ian Reidy is a specialist Financial Planner, advising high net worth clients in areas such as Estate Planning. He holds diplomas in Trusts & Estate Planning from the Law Society, and Tax from the Irish Tax Institute.

Recently, he has assisted families navigate their exit from Wardship into the Decision Support Service with the creation of bespoke Financial Plans.

Localising the international investment resources of the Royal Bank of Canada, these plans have the primary objective of providing a stable capital base to meet clients ongoing care and lifestyle requirements into the future.

Ian works directly with the solicitors in delivering these plans to the High Court for review.
